Yoga's Forgotten Foundation

Twenty Timeless Keys to Your Divine Destiny

by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami
Publication: Himalayan Academy

A must-read for serious yoga practitioners, meditators and anyone deeply involved with transformative spiritual life, Yoga's Forgotten Foundation delves into the integrated approach to yoga as taught by the great masters of India. It is a cogent reminder to those who want to start at the end of the spiritual path that there is an essential beginning, the neglect of which portends failure and disappointment. In 224 pages, with full-color Indian art, it explores the traditional foundation of yoga, twenty little-known guidelines on personal ethics, self-control and religious practice, called the yamas and niyamas.

The yamas and niyamas have been preserved through the centuries as the first and second stage of the eight-staged practice of yoga. They provide the essential foundation to support our yoga practice so that attainments in higher consciousness can be sustained.

The book begins with a forward by the author's spiritual successor, Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami, and takes the reader step by step through noninjury, truthfulness, nonstealing, sexual purity, patience, contentment and other facets of virtue. Grounded in a traditional Hindu point of view, yet admirably relevant to us all, the book discusses some of the toughest issues and challenges of modern life, including promiscuity, domestic abuse, child-rearing, overeating, gambling, vegetarianism, violence, injustice and pornography—relating them all to progress on the yoga path. It also explores the essential practices, including charity, worship, chanting mantras, austerity and scriptural study.

Update o the Aryan Invasion Debate

Update on the Aryan Invasion Debate

By Koenraad Elst
Publication: Aditya Prakashan

Until the mid-19th century, no Indian had ever heard of the notion that his ancestors could be Aryan invaders from Central Asia who had destroyed the native civilization and enslaved the native population. Neither had South-Indians ever dreamt that they were the rightful owners of the whole subcontinent, dispossessed by the Aryan invaders who had chased them from North India, turning it into Aryavarta, the land of the Aryans. Nor had the low-caste people heard that they were the original inhabitants of India, subdued by the Aryans and forced into the prisonhouse of caste which the conquerors imposed upon them as an early form of Apartheid. All these ideas had to be imported by European scholars and missionaries, who thought through the implications of the Aryan Invasion Theory (AM, the theory that the Indo-European (IE) language family had spread out from a given homeland, probably in Eastern Europe, and found a place in Western and Southern Europe and in India as cultural luggage of horse-borne invaders who subjugated the natives.

Negationism in India

Concealing the record of Islam

By Koenraad Elst
Publication: The Voice Of India

Negationism usually means the denial of the Nazi genocide of the Jews and Gypsies in World War 2. Less well-known is that India has its own brand of negationism. A section of the Indian intelligentsia is still trying to erase from the Hindus' memory the history of their persecution by the swordsmen of Islam. The number of victims of this persecution surpasses that of the Nazi crimes. The Islamic campaign to wipe out Paganism could not be equally thorough, but it has continued for centuries without any moral doubts arising in the minds of the persecutors and their chroniclers.

The Islamic reports on the massacres of Hindus, destruction of Hindu temples, the abduction of Hindu women and forced conversions, invariably express great glee and pride. They leave no doubt that the destruction of Paganism by every means, was considered the God-ordained duty of the Moslem community. Yet, today many Indian historians, journalists and politicians, deny that there ever was a Hindu-Moslem conflict. They shamelessly rewrite history and conjure up centuries of Hindu-Moslem amity; now a growing section of the public in India and the West only knows their negationist version of history. It is not a pleasant task to rudely shake people out of their delusions, especially if these have been wilfully created; but this essay does just that.

Hinduism and the Clash of Civilizations

The need for a new Indic School of Thought

By David Frawley (Vamadeva Shastri)
Publication: American Institute of Vedic Studies

In Hinduism and the Clash of Civilizations, Vamadeva calls for the Indian culture he loves to reassert itself against the failed ideologies of the West: state socialism and global capitalism. He lambastes the official intelligentsia of post-independence India for eschewing their own culture and turning to Western, mechanistic dogmas, from Marxism to neo-liberalism. Whether they worship the State or the Market, such intellectuals dishonour their country's noblest traditions.? They are as craven as those American and British academics who place politically correct considerations before the pursuit of truth and intellectual freedom. In the best of Indian popular culture, however, Frawley finds an integrity, a latitudinarian tolerance and a connectedness to nature lacking in intellectual circles — and lacking in Western civilisation today.

This dynamic book addresses the relevance of Hindu Dharma and its Vedic arts and sciences in the context of the current global clash of civilizations and crisis born of the twin evils of religious fundamentalism and consumerism. It promotes the need for a new Indic School of Thought and for developing new Vedic Schools, not only in Ayurveda, Vedic astrology and Yoga but in the Vedic mantras and in Hindu Dharma itself.

The book provides not just a critique of current problems but charts a way forward towards a Vedic civilization for the entire world. Recommended reading for our Vedic teacher training programs.

Hindu Society Under Siege

The United Front of Hostile Forces

by Sita Ram Goel
Publication: Voice of India, New Delhi

Hindu society is the only significant society in the world today which presents a continuity of cultural existence and functioning since times immemorial. Most other societies known to human history-East and West, North and South-have suffered a sudden interruption and undergone a traumatic transformation due to the invasion and victory of latter-day ideologies-Christianity, Islam, Communism. The pre-Christian, pre-Islamic and pre-Communist cultural creations of these societies are now to be met only in libraries and museums, thanks to the labours of antiquarian scholars. Hindu culture can meet the same frightful fate if there were no Hindu society to sustain it. This is the point which is not always remembered even by those who take pride in Hindu culture.

Hindu Temples: What happened to them?

Volume 1 — A Preliminary Survey

by Arun Shourie, Harsh Narain, Jay Dubashi, Ram Swarup, Sita Ram Goel
Publication: Voice of India, New Delhi

The movement for the restoration of the Ramajanmabhumi Temple at Ayodhya has brought to the fore a suppressed chapter of India?s history, namely, the large-scale destruction of Hindu temples1 by the Islamised invaders. This chapter is by no means closed. The Appendix to this book provides details of many temples destroyed by Muslims all over Bangladesh as recently as October-November 1989. Currently, temples, or whatever had remained of them, are meeting a similar fate in the Kashmir valley. In dealing with its subject, it exercises complete fidelity to truth; unlike secularist and Marxist writers, it does not believe in re-writing and fabricating history. Its aim is to raise the informational level of our people and to make them better aware of the more persistent ideological forces at work.

Vidya Vahini

Flow of Spiritual Education

Baba has clarified that the word Vidya used for this Vahini (Stream of Thought) means (Ya) that which (Vid) "illumines." It is this sense that is highlighted in expressions like Athma Vidya, Brahma Vidya etc., or even the name Vidyagiri given to the campus of Prasanthi Nilayam which comprises the Institute of Higher Learning. Baba make us aware of the comparatively less beneficial lower learning which deals with theories, inferences, concepts, conjectures and constructions. The Higher Learning hastens and expands the universal urge to know and become Truth, Goodness and Beauty, Sathyam, Sivam, Sundaram. The human race has to voyage on an even keel; it is learning too alarmingly towards the briny grave; the lower learning is lowering it into the bottomless pit. Vidya alone is the remedy.

This precious book provides us the chance to peruse nineteen essays He wrote in answer to appeals for the elucidation of the principles which must guide us while rehabilitating Education as an effective instrument for establishing peace and freedom in us and on Earth.

Upanishad Vahini

Essence of Vedic Knowledge

This book which gives, in English, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's articles (first published in Telugu in the Sanathana Sarathi) on the Ten Upanishads (invaluable text-books on spiritual discipline and on the glorious fruit of spiritual adventure) will reveal to you the vast limitless Mercy which impels Him to save us from trivialities and prompts Him to guide us along, until we reach the Goal of Life.

Making us tread the path discovered by the Sages of the past, inducing us to revere their Light and their Message, illumining in us the Flame of Knowledge which dispels delusion - that is what Bhagavan, with His Supreme Love, does for us in this book.

Month after month, thousands of readers awaited these articles (in the original Telugu as well as in the English translation) and when they received their copy, they perused it dilligently and with reverential eagerness. Gita Vahini

The divine Gospel

This precious book is not a commentary or summary of the Geetha that was taught on the field of Kurukshetra. We need not learn any new language or read any old text to imbibe the lesson that the Lord is eager to teach us now, for victory in the battle we are now waging. This Geethavahini is the same stream, refreshing and re-vitalising, brought by the same divine restorer to revivify man caught in the mesh of modern dialectics, in the pride of modern science, in the cynical scorn of modern superficiality. The teaching here set forth will comfort, console, and confer strength and faith.

The Story of God and His Devotees

The Bhagavatha is a dialogue between a person under the sentence of death and a great saint, who prepared him to meet it. We are all under a sentence of death; our hearts, like muffled drums, are beating funeral marches to the grave. Some reach it late, some soon. We require the counsel of a great saint, to prepare us too, for meeting death and witness the horizon beyond.

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the transcendental science not only for knowing the ultimate source of everything but also for knowing our relation with Him and our duty toward perfection of the human society on the basis of this perfect knowledge. It is powerful reading matter in the Sanskrit language, and it is now rendered into English elaborately so that simply by a careful reading one will know God perfectly well, so much so that the reader will be sufficiently educated to defend himself from the onslaught of atheists. Over and above this, the reader will be able to convert others to accepting God as a concrete principle.

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam begins with the definition of the ultimate source. It is a bona fide commentary on the Vedānta-sūtra by the same author, Śrīla Vyāsadeva, and gradually it develops into nine cantos up to the highest state of God realization. The only qualification one needs to study this great book of transcendental knowledge is to proceed step by step cautiously and not jump forward haphazardly like with an ordinary book. It should be gone through chapter by chapter, one after another. The reading matter is so arranged with its original Sanskrit text, its English transliteration, synonyms, translation and purports so that one is sure to become a God-realized soul at the end of finishing the first nine cantos.

The Bhagavad Gita – translated by Swami Swarupananda

Atma Jyoti Ashram Publication

This translation was printed in the early part of the twentieth century. Although Swarupananda was active in its preparation, it is really the work of Sister Nivedita (Margaret Noble) a disciple of Swami Vivekananda who spent the rest of her life in India after meeting the great Swami. Her work in India was mostly in education, but she also wrote some books and articles and made this translation. Why it was not printed under her name we are not sure. Perhaps it was because at that time the movement for independence was gaining momentum in India and a translation of India’s supreme scripture by a citizen of the oppressing country might not have been welcome. Also, the publication of any writings by a woman was totally unknown at that time–and therefore liable to disapproval.

Arise Arjun — Awaken my Hindu Nation

Your Journey with me into the world of lesser known facts

This booklet shows the agony of a scholar who wants to present the truth before the public about the mess created in case of Shri Raam Mandir, Ayodhya. Now the facts have been covered under garbage in the name of secularism by so-called professors, academicians and men of justice, politicians and press. The write-up is straightforward, frank and honest. The Author, Shri Maanoj Rakhit, is telling the truth, the facts about Raam Mandir in Ayodhya, exposing the secular professors and men and women in high positions who have tried their best to cover up the truth about existence of Raam Mandir, which Muslims - true to the teachings of their religion - had demolished. It is worth reading.

    • Journey through Horrors of Islam
    • Journey through Saintly duplicity
    • Journey through dishonest Secularism
