Malay Words of Sanskrit Origin

Sanskrit is the primary ancient language spoken in most part of the world including Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe. Later it evolved into early languages such as Prakrit, Pali, old Tamil, Persian, Greek, Latin, Javanese, Sumerian and old Chinese. The modern languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Arab, Hebrew, Thai, Malay, Tagalog, Korean, Chinese, English, German, French, Russian and many others are of recent offshoot of these early languages.

In this page we will decipher the root of Malay words from Sanskrit. It has to be noted that many of these Malay words may have its origin from the early Javanese language which is also of the same Sanskrit root. Later in the recent history, the Malay language has included many loan words directly from Arabic, Tamil, Hindi, English, and the Chinese.

The great Hindu epics the Ramayana and Mahabharata were known throughout Southeast Asia, but it was the Hikayat Seri Rama that most profoundly influenced Malay literary tradition. There are however also Malay versions of the Mahabharata known as Hikayat Perang Pandawa Jaya, "The tale of the war of the victorious Pandawa" and Hikayat Maharaja Boma.

Words such as putera, son; puteri, daughter; asmara, love; samudra, ocean; belantra, jungle; kenchana, gold; sukma, soul; and literally thousands of other words are all Skt. words, either in original or in modified form.
